Its six number one singles on the Billboard Hot 100 tying for fifth among solo women who reached number one there. She won a Grammy for "Best Music Video - Short Form" of "opposites attract" and twice won the "Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Choreography."

The daughter of Harry Abdul, owner of a sand and gravel business, and Lorraine Abdul, a pianist, Paula grew up in the San Fernando Valley. Abdul showed a passion for dance at an early age, and began taking lessons at eight years old. In addition to her dance classes, Paula Abdul was a conscientious student. By the time she entered Van Nuys High School, she was an honor student and cheerleader. At 15, she received a scholarship to a Palm Springs dance camp, and appeared in the 1978 musical film Junior High School, with several other Van Nuys students.

After high school, Paula Abdul continued her studies at California State University Northridge, where he specialized in communications. But the dance continues to be his greatest passion, and during his first year he was elected to the CSU for more than 700 women to come to the Los Angeles Lakers cheerleader. Three months after the Laker girl, Abdul was chosen as chief choreographer of the group. She dropped out of CSU, after six months to fully concentrate on his career as a dancer. The move paid off, and soon attracted the attention of Abdul choreographed the Jackson 5, which took him on as an assistant dance director on the victory tour.
